Open Campus = Happy Students

Some schools, usually in a warmer place have an "open campus". This means students are aloud to go outside or even leave the school grounds during lunch. I think this is a great idea. It allows more freedom for students and gives more of a college feel to the school. Having an open campus would really enhance the high school experience for a lot of teens.Maybe if we had an open campus more students would be interested in learning. As a student myself I know that we (the students) need something to look forward to each day.

Being strictly confined to the school 6 hours day, five days a week for 180 days is just exhausting. Think about it; going to the same place for a long time for almost a whole year. Maybe I'm crazy but I know that sometimes in school I need a break and I just wish I could go outside. Unless we're all recluses we don't want to be stuck inside. It would be a great incentive for students to work for. Being able to go outside would probably increase the attendance, everyone would look forward to going and being able to go different places for lunch. "The kids who have good grades will be aloud outside but others will have to stay inside for their lunch period." says Hannah Nordstrom a Freshman at Norton High School.

Although I think this is a good idea I do understand that there are some students that will push the boundaries. Lets face it, in every school there are those kids that skip school, ditch class, and leave during the middle of school. I know that there will be at least one probably more students that will leave if there is an open campus, but don't punish the students that do nothing wrong. The faculty could prevent this by having a penalty for anyone who leaves during their lunch period outside. Perhaps they could be suspended or there could be a rule that students with grades under a certain average will have to eat inside. Instead of assuming that all students will leave if they eat outside, give us a chance.

I think it would be a good idea because if you can drive you could go to a restaurant close by and pick something up as long as you're back before your lunch is over. There should be a sign out sheet so the faculty would know who left. If some students choose to leave then that's their problem and they can be punished. Giving students more freedom probably will increase their grades if there is a certain grade average they have to have in order to receive the privilege. To me that sounds like an amazing idea. Would you rather be stuck inside and not "trusted" to go outside and enjoy the day, or would you want to be outside and enjoying a little while with your friends at lunch? It seems like an obvious answer but maybe I'm completely wrong.
